The Spongus gluanteus is a giant sponge specimen that can only be found in the deepest part of the ancient mines on Black Isle. Because this invertebrate lives in a dark and moist area, it has developed a slight fluorescence similar to the plant organisms thriving in the caves. It doesn't seem to be affected by anyone walking on top of it. Its scientific name comes from the fact that they feel gelatinous to the touch.

Though inedible, Pey'j mentions that the giant sponge has an uncanny resemblance to a meal his aunt Geneva used to make: chocolate-covered squid with kiwi sauce.

It is based on the real-life sponge species that come in many different shapes and sizes.
